After you’ve taken your early training on a student instrument it’s time to step up to a performance level instrument. Intermediate and advanced instruments offer better tone quality and greater dynamic range which allow the advancing student or enthusiast to express their music more fully. While student instruments are optimized for easy response in the beginner’s range of notes, performance level instruments are designed for even response throughout the whole range of the instrument. Brass players will notice better response in extreme high and low ranges, woodwind players will notice improved voicing of tone quality, note-to-note throughout the instrument’s range.

These benefits are only achieved by the use of more expensive materials, much additional labour time by the skilled craftspeople who make the instruments, and continuing research and development.

Performance level instruments retain their value, sometimes outpacing inflation and actually appreciating in value. Students and enthusiasts with a couple years spent on a student instrument should consider Stepping Up sooner rather than later. Performance level instruments allow progress to continue which would otherwise be impossible or at least very slow on a training level instrument.
